Description
A truly spectacular four-season color factory, the Ivory Halo is a deciduous shrub form Tatarian Dogwood adored for its colorful leaves, bark, flowers, and berries, each taking the stage at different times through the year. Perhaps the most outstanding feature are the bright red stems during winter that stand out especially nice against a light background or snowy backdrop. During spring and summer the 5 to 6 feet tall and wide shrub is clothed in highly attractive variegated green leaves bordered in white. In late spring, flat-topped clusters of tiny yellow-white flowers are borne at the tips of stems. Clusters of pretty blue-white berries the birds will enjoy follow the flowers. With the arrival of cold temperatures in fall the leaves turn attractive red and purple shades. A wonderful ornamental addition to any landscape, in sun or part shade.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Ivory Halo Tatarian Dogwood is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or hedges in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. Because it tolerates a consistently moist soil it is perfect for those areas where the soil just doesn’t want to dry out. That said, it won’t tolerate standing water. A fine addition to white or red theme gardens, bird and wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 4.5 feet apart for hedge; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Ivory Halo Tatarian Dogwood is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Tolerates wet periods but not standing water. Appreciates some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon in hot and humid climates. Very low maintenance when left alone and we’ve seen no serious insect or disease problems.
Â
Although pruning is not necessary, many folks choose to remove about 25 percent of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring of each year to encourage growth of new stems which will display the brightest red color the next winter season. Alternatively, every 2 to 3 years all stems can be cut back to 8 inches above the ground for total renewal.
