Description

Aztec Grass, a variety of Liriope, also known as Lily Turf or Monkey Grass, is one tough perennial plant. Stomp on it, drive over it with your car, cut it back to the ground and you won’t kill it. Unlike other Liriope that will wildly spread where they are not wanted, Aztec Grass forms neat clumps which gradually increase in size over time. In other words, you won’t see runners popping up 2 feet away from the plant! Aztec Grass sports some very attractive variegated leaves of white to creamy white with a green strip down the center. Petite lilac-lavender flowers rise above the 12 to 15-inch clumps of grass-like foliage in summer adding extra appeal to what is already a colorful plant.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 inches tall and spreading 18 inches or more over time , its neat clump-forming habit make Aztec Grass ideal for use as a border edge along paths, walkways and patios. For an outstanding splash of color, plant in groupings or mass plantings landscape borders and home foundation plantings. An excellent underplanting for small or large trees. Provides excellent foliage contrast when planted under Red leaf Japanese Maples and other trees or larger shrubs with darker foliage. Also a nice grassy and colorful accent in combination container gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 12 to 18 inches for mass planting or as a solid border edger

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Liriope variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Aztec Grass is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or shade. Foliage color will be brighter with more sun. If desired, plants can be cut back to ground in late winter before new growth emerges.
